Tip #651: Leverage
November 25, 2007 – 7:23 pm
Ask yourself this question, “What one thing can I do now that will have the greatest impact for Christ?” Sometimes when we are stuck or when we feel like we are not accomplishing our goal, this question can give you an action step, a point of leverage, that will help you move something big forward. Several years ago, I was leading a campus club that was floundering in attendance. On a campus of 2000, no matter how much promotion I did, I was stuck at 20 students. The next semester, I changed the meeting day from Tuesday to Thursday, and our attendance jumped to 200! It turned out that Tuesday mornings I was competing with another school activity that the students had to attend. Changing the day was a small thing that had a tremendous impact. What is the small thing that you can do in your ministry today that will have the greatest impact tomorrow? Leave a comment to share your answer.
The Tipster adds: Early in the planning process, check calendars for all the school districts in your area, as well as school clubs, community events and sports calendars, looking for large (or mandatory) events that will draw students and families away from your hard work planning and organizing. Don’t neglect your church’s master calendar and your own family calendar, too, to avoid painful meetings (or dinners) later.

This really just lifted me… I recently lost a job (laid-off) at a youth ministry as director of youth and young adults. I am still volunteering but things are transitioning and I dont carry the ‘leverage’ anymore to make things happen for the better. So in this situation I become depressed and feel useless in everyday life and its beginning to affect my work with this ministry. Its ironic, Im unemployed but I am in the middle of so many situations that weigh so heavily that I stay busy and and stressed all the time. I really just want to focus on what God wants me to do now and how He can use me where I am at.

Tim, thanks for the reminder that focusing on God and His will are the best leverage points there are!
